Create Covered Buttons using Gross Grain Ribbon
I love to accent pillows and bedding with when I create covered buttons. This is the least inexpensive way to add professional looking accents to your DIY Projects. I can remember my grandmother having a button box and cutting buttons off every old shirt or garment. Today we have many options for cute stylish buttons and will share how to make a covered button using gross grain ribbon.
Using a button kit is easy and inexpensive. What about sizing when using a cover button kit? The most popular in home decor are the #36 =7/8" button, #45 = 1 1/8" button, #60 = 1 1/2" button and #75 = 1 7/8" button.
All of the button kits include a button presser and setter for hand setting your decorative buttons.
How to create covered buttons with gross grain ribbon? as easy as 1.2.3. Start by selecting a small width of ribbon that will fit the width of your button. The angle and design is up to you... but we crisis-crossed out ribbon with orange gross grain ribbon on this sample button.
Selecting a light weight fabric is best when using gross grain ribbon to make a covered button, a fabric that doesn't ravel is important as well.
I like to use craft & hobby Sealah tape to tape the ribbon in place. Sealah tape will stick to most anything and is not messy to use. It's a double sided adhesive that is available in many widths for your ribbon. Great way to create covered buttons.
Next cut your fabric into a circle about 1/2" to 3/4" inch larger than the button.
The next step is to center the fabric on to the button shell and place the shell into the rubber button mold. The fabric should gather up like a little pouch. Then tuck in the fabric and cover it with the button back.
Place the button back into place and set the pusher on the button back. I will normally snap into place but there are times you will need to use a rubber mallet to tap the button back into place. You will hear a small snap when the back seats against the shell.
